SCS Newsletter 09-16-2024
Dear singers,
Please read through this message for information about this week’s rehearsal, and upcoming opportunities for you!
Message not received… I had a few people tell me last week that they did not receive the weekly message. I will look into this, but please know that if you think you have missed a message, you can look for the latest POST on the member page. All the same information is listed here. Once again, our password for this year is SCSyear9 Today – I am sending the message directly TO each of you instead of BCC to see if that makes any difference….. Please Do NOT “Reply All.” I do appreciate knowing if messages are not reaching you!
Outreach Opportunities: Only HALF of you have filled out the survey about additional performing opportunities in Late Nov/ Dec (Holidazzle, College Club and Findlay Market). We need everyone’s reply ASAP! https://forms.gle/yy45wSD1v19iRzWp6
Annual Budget: Please read the linked short explanation and budget spreadsheet. If you have questions, feel free to email Don before this week’s rehearsal. We will discuss briefly at rehearsal and hope to approve promptly!
Director Search Update: Our search team has been hard at work and will begin interviewing candidates this week!
Social Outings/Opportunities: Paul Alexander shares that he is planning SCS’s second annual Golf Outing for Sunday, October 6th at 4:00. Also, SCS will once again register a team for the Matthew 25 Ministries Hunger 5K run/walk. The race/fundraiser starts at 8:30 am on Saturday, November 2. Mark your calendars and plan to participate in both of these fun gatherings! More information to come…
Free Concerts! There are two opportunities to hear the May Festival Chamber Choir in concert with their new director, Matthew Swanson! Tickets are free, but you need to reserve your space.
Sunday, October 6 at 2:30 at Westwood First Presbyterian Church (You can go directly to the golf outing afterwards!), and
Sunday, October 20 at 4:00 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Covington.
If you are involved in performing groups in addition to SCS, please share your upcoming show details with Mary Wynn to add to this newsletter!
From Polly:
REMINDER #1 – “Thankful” Ensemble Auditions – Sept 19 & Sept 26 at 6:15 PM
€ Please be prepared to sing mm 33-40 in small groups with 1 on a part. The goal is to find a group that can do this a capella, so I will NOT play your part with you every time you sing at your audition.
ALL Tenors – Please learn the T1 part for this audition. Thanks.
Baritone/Bass – You are always the lowest note, as you never have the div. in this song.
€ If time allows, we will also sing through mm. 17-23 in small groups.
€ LISTEN to the dynamic choices being made in this full performance recording:
Thankful full performance from JWPepper

REMINDER #2 – For NEWER members who’ve joined in the last 4-5 years: Hopefully you’ve been familiarizing yourself with the pieces we’ve already learned in the past. With the use of the rehearsal tracks, my hope is that your advanced music reading skills – which you had to demonstrate when you auditioned – will serve you well in playing “catch up” with the rest of the choir. You might want to sit down before a rehearsal some time and copy markings from another member who has performed past pieces with us.
LESSON PLAN for SEPT 19
ALL BEGIN IN SANCTUARY at 7PM
Proclamation of Gratitude – We will sing the entire piece once through.
€ Review your part, especially mm 35-50 & mm 73-end.

Ocho Kandelikas – We will sing the entire piece once through.
€ Review your part in mm 9-47, with one pronunciation correction: The final syllable of KANDELIKA(s) should have a KAH(s) sound, which is different than the first syllable where I asked for a KAW(nd) sound. Grateful we have a Spanish teacher in our ranks! Thanks, Kathryn!
